Joe Shimamura (島村ジョー Shimamura Jo), also known by his codename 009, is the eponymous protagonist of the manga Cyborg 009.He is the most advanced cyborg created by the organization Black Ghost during their initial attempt of creating cyborg soldiers. After living through several bad experiences, including his conversion into a cyborg, he becomes leader of the team. Joe has a tender heart with having gone through a terrible childhood and wanting to find the good in people. At the beginning of the series, he was rather alarmed by everything that was happening, such as his transformation and the events surrounding it.Eventually, he calms down with the ideal to strive for peace by defeating Black Ghost, proving himself to be a capable leader along the way. However, his tenderness is also a weakness, especially in battle where life and death seem imminent, often causing great confusion. Some people have also pointed out 009's rather fragile mind after going through a crisis. Still, this also shows how much he values the other cyborgs and how he cannot stand to lose them. Joe is a young man of average height with a slender build, and is approximately 18 years old. He is chronologically the youngest 00 cyborg, being a year younger than his teammate, Francoise Arnoul (when not counting the 40 years that she spent cryogenically frozen). He has dark brown, windswept hair with red eyes; one eye is always covered by his bangs.Like his teammates, Joe wears a red, double-breasted military uniform with four large buttons on the front, padded shoulders, and black contrast bands underneath. On his waist is a black belt with a holster for his gun (which has 6 modes; the blue ray gun; the gold blaster; the magnum shot; the freeze ray; the sleep ray and the needle gun), and he wears knee-high black boots.
Cyborg 009
Skull, the evil leader of the terrorist organization known as Black Ghost, has nine powerful cyborgs under his control. But Dr. Isaac Gilmore, the Black Ghosts cybernetics scientist, decides to go rogue, helping the cyborgs turn against Skull and his evil organization. Black Ghost wishes to start the next major world war by flooding the market with weapons of mass destruction. It seems the nine brave cyborgs have their work cut out for them, as Black Ghost is determined to bring those nine cyborgs down.
