Asukasei has short dark-colored hair and reddish brown eyes. He wears glasses and the standard Hope's Peak Uniform with a bright turquoise tie. He appears to be a serious person, not seeming to smile much even in ordinary situations. Despite appearing relatively calm during the beginning of the Killing Game, he quickly becomes aggressive and panicked once the killing begins, as shown with his screaming assaults on Tomohiko and Aiko. By the end of the Killing Game, Asukasei has become completely unhinged, laughing madly and mocking the dead victims after he assumed he was the only survivor. However, he also vomits in shock and disgust, implying that he is still driven by fear and desperation. His newfound paranoia is reinforced when he blindly attacks Izuru, despite Izuru warning him and showing no aggression towards him.

Hope's Peak Academy's unconventional class 77-B is about to have an even more eccentric addition: Chisa Yukizome, an alumna with the title of Super High School-Level Housekeeper—and their new homeroom teacher. Cheerful, passionate, and capable, Chisa immediately sets about correcting the students' problematic behavior and strengthening their relationships. It may not be easy dealing with diverse pupils ranging from princesses and nurses to yakuza and impossibly lucky students, but anything is possible with the power of hope. Meanwhile, Hajime Hinata, an unremarkable boy from the school's Reserve Course, longs for a talent. One day, he has an unexpected meeting with class 77-B's Super High School-Level Gamer Chiaki Nanami, who presents to him a new, hope-filled outlook on life. Zetsubou-hen chronicles the daily lives carried out at the talent-cultivating academy, and the darkness that lurks beneath. A group of 15 elite high school students are gathered at a very special, high class high school. To graduate from this high school essentially means you'll succeed in life, but graduating is very difficult. The school is presided over by a bear called Monokuma, and he explains to them that their graduation hinges around committing a murder. The only way to graduate is to kill one of your classmates and get away with it. If the other classmates discover the identity of the killer, the killer is the only one executed. However, if they fail to catch the killer, only the killer graduates and the others are annihilated. Which of the 15 will survive the bloodbath to come?
