It is described as a small creature, either a bird or a mammal, that has a gem in its forehead crystallized from the brain of a dead dragon. According to myth, it is good luck to catch a carbuncle. A carbuncle is also an archaic name given to any red cabochon cut gemstone. The name applied particularly to red garnet.

Monster Musume: Everyday Monster Girls Online was an online game based on the manga series of the same name. Announced July, 2015, the game is published by DMM Games (KanColle, Touken Ranbu) and opened for play December 21st, 2015. Although based on the manga Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls the online game possesses an original story and original characters, where the player will participate as a Home Stay host for monster girls in accordance to the Cultural Exchange Between Species Bill. As the game progresses, players can raise the intimacy level with their home stays, and ultimately trigger a “rewarding event.” The game was shut down on the 22nd of November, 2016, at 12pm JST, however, while the game itself became inactive and no longer able to be played, the author of the Monster Musume manga, Okayado, has expressed interest in having the game's characters appear in his own works in the future.
