Falkner appears in Gold and Silver, Crystal and HeartGold, and SoulSilver, where he is the first Gym Leader the player faces. A master of the Flying type, Valerio manages the Violapoli Gym inherited from his father. In the game, Valerio's father is mentioned but never seen. Known as the elegant flying-type Pokémon master, Falkner is much admired for being a very smart and charming type, but is overshadowed by his father's notoriety. For this reason Valerio aspires to become the greatest coach of the Flying type. Valerio uses the lowest level Pokémon in each gym. His Pidgeotto is in fact at a sub-level. In addition to the Zephyr Medal, Falkner gives the player the TM31 (Mud Slap) in Gold and Silver, Crystal and the TM51 (Perch) in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Like all HeartGold and SoulSilver Gym Leaders, Falkner ventures out of his gym from time to time. Once the player gets the Soul Medal, Valerio can be found every Monday at Celadon City where he visits the shopping center. He can be found talking to Nina, Fuchsia City Gym Leader, on the third floor of the building, and by talking to him you will receive his PokéGear number. Once this is done, Valerio will go to the Karate Dojo in Saffron City every Saturday morning, ready to accept a rematch. In addition, he can also participate in the Pokéathlon Supreme Cup with his Pidgeot, Swellow and Altaria
