Built for the Imperial Japanese Navy, Hiryū was built based on a heavily modified Sōryū design, putting Hiryū in her own class. Hiryū saw extensive service during WW2 with her aircraft participating in the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Wake Island. Her aircraft also assisted in the sinking of the heavy cruisers HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Cornwall during the Indian Ocean raid in April 1942. Hiryū's final operation was during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. After helping to bomb enemy forces on the Midway Atoll, Hiryū came under heavy bombing from USS Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown. Hiryū was swiftly defeated along with the carriers Akagi, Kaga and Sōryū, and was scuttled the following day.
