Hornet was the third vessel of Yorktown-class aircraft carriers. Her first action in service was to launch Doolittle Raid on T-City. On 18 April, the B25 squadron led by General D. took off from Hornet, completing the bombing raid on J-Country, and landed in C-Country. In the middle of May, all Yorktown-class aircraft carriers including Hornet participated in the Battle of Midway and defeated J-Country’s mobile strike force. Those three aircraft carriers contributed to this decisive turning point in Pacific naval battles. In October 1942, Hornet attacked Shōkaku and Chikuma during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. However, Hornet was severely damaged and was sunk by destroyer afterwards.
