Mutsuki-class destroyers were the extension of Minekaze-class destroyer, equipped with 61cm triple torpedo launchers. During the Pacific War, Mutsuki assigned as the escort ship for Wake Island landing forces. After Wake Island campaign, she served as troop transport to Solomon Islands, and then reassigned to cargo ship escort duty. In the Guadalcanal campaign 1942, she was sunk by a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber in the Battle of the East Solomon.
