Sumire Kano is the former student council president and always manages to get the top grades in school; she is a scholarship student and has horrible eyesight, yet prefers not to wear glasses. Sumire likes Yusaku and as a result is the object of a one-sided hostility from Taiga. She later leaves and studies abroad in America, as she wants to become an astronaut, and because of this, she rejects Yusaku's confession and conceals her own feelings, so that he will not pursue her in America. She has a strong-minded personality which she depends on to be a figure to those who will follow. Sumire is strong, tall, imposing, and cold, yet very beautiful but she actually has a softer side. Sumire can be also seen as really smart, as she is a scholarship student and always gets high grades at school and also manages being the student council. As mentioned in her first episode, she can be quite forgetful, proven by her not remembering how many students forgot their handbooks, and said by Taiga, as she forgot to say "At ease." Sumire is really strong-minded but actually quite kind, she is afraid to hurt other people and also helps other people when they are in need. This is shown when she helps Yusaku and invites him to join the Student Council after he got rejected by Taiga. Another example is also when Yusaku confesses his feelings for her, but rejected him in order for him not to follow her in America because the school will need a new student council president. She has long, beautiful dark blue hair and eyes. She wears the school uniform, consisting of a grey skirt, white ruffled blouse and a red coat.

Despite Ryuji Takasu's gentle personality, his eyes make him look like an intimidating delinquent so he is utterly hopeless about his chances of getting a girlfriend anytime soon, and does not have many close friends either. After being greeted by his hungover mother in the morning, Ryuji goes to school and is happy to find that he gets to be in the same class as his best friend Yusaku Kitamura and crush Minori Kushieda. However, it is then that he unexpectedly knocks into "the school's most dangerous animal of the highest risk level" — Taiga Aisaka — who just happens to also be in his class, and is a good friend of Minori.
