Tetsuo Shima was a member of a teenage biker gang and the deuteragonist of Akira. He was Shotaro Kaneda's childhood friend. After a near-collision with Takashi and being experimented by the Japanese military government, he rapidly develops powerful, psychic abilities. Tetsuo goes on a violent search of methods to improve and better control his new powers.

In 1988 the Japanese government drops an atomic bomb on Tokyo after ESP experiments on children go awry.
