Makoto "Edamame" Edamura is the main protagonist of the Great Pretender anime. He is the self-proclaimed greatest con-man in Japan. Hoping to find a high-paying job to pay off his ill mother's medical bills, he landed a job working for Kudo at a company scamming customers. He was arrested and sent to prison, and because his father Seiji Ozaki was a corrupt lawyer, he could not prove his innocence. After being released on parole his reputation and criminal record prevented him from landing an honest job. After his mother passed away, he decided that he wanted to become the greatest con man in Japan with no other means of gaining income. He ends up becoming Laurent Thierry's partner after unsuccessfully trying to con him while on a visit to Japan. He is a member of Team Confidence. Makoto is a young Japanese man in his twenties of average stature. He’s about 5’6 and has a rather thin build, messy brown hair with bangs, and long legs. He wears glasses in the beginning but stops wearing them after Episode 5. In Case 2, he has an undercut.
Great Pretender
Makoto Edamura is a con man who is said to be “Japan's greatest swindler.” One day, after trying to pickpocket a foreigner, Edamura finds that all of his money was stolen instead. Chasing the man down all the way to Los Angeles, he learns the foreigner is Laurent Thierry, a French con man who has ties to international criminal organizations. After Edamura follows Thierry and thwarts his big drug deal, Edamura gets tied up and left to die on the famous Hollywood sign.
