Saki Hanakago is a human who was selected to be a god candidate by the angel Revel. __Appearance__ Saki is a fairly shy-looking girl, with brown hair which falls to just above her shoulders and a choppy fringe. She has a round face and round brown eyes, which add to her timid appearance. She is slightly shorter than the protagonist, Mirai Kakehashi. __Personality__ Saki is a rather timid individual and kind to a fault. She felt so bad about being pressured into bulling Mirai in elementary school, the guilt would drive her to commit suicide in high school. After becoming a god candidate and making amends with Mirai, she's empathetic towards his struggles and those of other characters. While she does not want to kill anyone, she is more willing to manipulate people with the red arrow than Mirai. When asked what she would do if she became god, Saki said, "The world that I hope for is one of smiles, where everyone is full of warmth and gentleness."

After the death of his parents, a young Mirai Kakehashi is left in the care of his abusive relatives. Since then, he has become gloomy and depressed, leading him to attempt suicide on the evening of his middle school graduation. Mirai, however, is saved by a pure white girl named Nasse who introduces herself as a guardian angel wishing to give him happiness—by granting him supernatural powers and a chance to become the new God. In order to earn the position, he must defeat 12 other "God Candidates" within 999 days. Soon, Mirai begins a struggle to survive as a terrifying battle royale erupts between himself and the candidates looking to obtain the most power in the world.

Mirai Kakehashi is a young student fed up with a life of abuse from his uncle and aunt who raised him since his parents' death, but is saved by a Guardian Angel called Nasse after attempting to commit suicide. Upon learning from Nasse that his foster parents were responsible for the deaths of his father and mother, Mirai uses the powers she bestowed him in order to confront them and enact justice. However, Mirai's ordeals are just beginning as Nasse soon after informs him that God will retire in 999 days and thirteen candidates to replace him were selected including Mirai himself. To make matters worse, not only can Mirai not refuse to take part in the contest to decide the next God, but among the other candidates there are those capable of anything to win, including killing all the competition as soon as possible.
